I had the pleasure of interviewing Kavah King. He is someone who I look at as a brother in this community as well as inspiration and someone I plan to work closely with in the near future. I believe that when he and I step out and put on for Brooklyn, we will help change the game.

Here is our interview: 

Ok Kavah so let us get right to it!

You being a plus size model how do you feel you are aiding the progression of the plus size/ body positivity movement?

To be honest, it's an honor to represent men of size on my small platform. I feel that men like you and I are showing the diversity and that there are so many different dynamics for men of size. I feel like I am aiding the progression by pushing the idea that there are no limitations. 

Do you feel that there is still room for improvement or expansion amongst the plus size community in the fashion industry in terms of brands, advertisement, collaboration, products, etc?

There is always room for improvement. Many advancements have been made, but we still need to see a bit more diversity. Men of size come in all shapes and size, brands, collaborations, advertisers, and products should reflect that. 

As a plus-size model and influencer, what do you feel is your responsibility?

My responsibility is to make it the norm to see men of size outside of the roles that we have been limited to. I really want to push the movement that our woman counterparts have advocated for so valiantly. Women have been on the forefront of body positivity and size equality fight for years. I want to be as consistent and courageous as they have been. 

What tips would you share with the plus size guy who isn’t that confident or is seeking ways to improve his image? What’s your secret?

My secret is to love yourself. You have to accept what you cant change and change the things that you can change. But, it starts with self-love and acceptance. Be yourself,  there is only one you on the planet. 

Are there any things that you may have faced that taught you major lessons in regards to this community or your work?

Yes! I learned to appreciate and respect all men of size. Many of us have different walks of life and backgrounds, but we all have things in common. We all have a commonality. 

Where do you see the plus size male movement going in the next 3-5 years? 

I see that there isn't a limit to the plus male movement. I see no ceilings at all. 

What is it like working with people like Ady Del Valle, Rob Robinson, Darnell Grahmm, Reginald Shrerard, and others?

I think that it's an amazing opportunity. I get excited every time I get to work with my "brawn brothers."

What are some of your go-to brands, or pieces to create your looks?

In true big man fashion, my favorite piece is a hoodie. My favorite brands right now are Bad Rhino and  The Winston Box. I love the way that they are progressing big and tall fashion. 

What’s next for you and Gentlemen’s Curb? Anything we should be on the lookout for?

I am just looking to be consistent and most likely add more videos to my repertoire. 

What advice would you give another blogger who is seeking to build connections not just in the plus size community but in general?

Be assertive. Be Yourself. Never be scared to have a conversation. Dont seek out to "build connections," just enjoy your craft. Everything else will come.

Hey guys, we are continuing our Breaking the Mold series with this break out model from London.

David Fadd (@dxve_fxdd) is a plus size model who is currently signed to BRIDGE Models. He has been recently taking major leaps in the industry and I wanted to catch up with him about his experience as a plus model and influencer. And also get some words of wisdom from this plus size gent on confidence and style.

THE INTERVIEW:

Hey David so happy to have the opportunity to interview you for the “Breaking the Mold a Garment at a Time” series here on jayrswardrobe.com. Glad we have a chance to chit chat. I’ve been looking at your work and growth over the past few months and you truly sparked my interest, so I am eager and excited to speak with you today. 

"Ah! The pleasure is all mine, thank you so much for having me,I'm absolutely excited to get into it with you today." 

Alright David so lets jump right to it.  We know that you are signed to BRIDGE. What is it like being a signed model? How do you feel its aiding the plus size/ body positivity movement. 

"Being signed! Yeah that came completely out of the blue... It's been a great time so far, Its been about 5 / 6 months so far. It's definitely gotten a very warm reception from my immediate community which for me means another step closer to more accepting with variation in size/shape."

Do you feel that there is still room for improvement or expansion amongst the plus size community in the fashion industry in terms if brands, advertisement, collaboration, products, etc?

"Most definitely! I think we have come such a long way.... but there's an even longer way to go. We all come in different shapes and sizes, for example I'm 6ft4, 3XL, 44 waist, all of my wardrobe are things I've purchased online (Minus accessories & gifts) due to how impossible it can be to pop into the local NEXT for a jacket. I'm looking forward to the day where these big brands open PLUS stores everywhere! Ha Ha"

As a plus size model and influencer, what do you feel is your responsibility?

"I think its my responsibility to show everyone that I encounter that it's possible to be as Big & Tall as I am and still look as good. To show people that It's fine to not be able to find jeans in "TOPMAN" but its not your fault. To genuinely enjoy your size and own it. It's not about "Looking good for a big guy" its about "Looking good" and feeling comfortable to express yourself.”

What tips would you share with the plus size guy who isn’t that confident or is seeking ways to improve his image?

"Errrm... Tips! Firstly, Take responsibility for yourself and your size, understand your shape and what looks good on you. We all have different taste and styles, but understanding yours is a starting point. Secondly, understand that being a Plussize isn't a negative thing neither does it make you less than anyone else. Lastly, research and pay attention to details!! in some places I'm a 46 waist and a 2XL find find out about sizing and materials. Most Plussize models are "long legs and broad shoulders" like me, If you're not get to know bloggers & public figures that may have a similar build to you. Do your research!”

Are there any things that you may have faced that taught you major lessons in regards to this community?

“I’ve learned that being the person I want to be comes with opposition, a lot of hard work and remaining respectful and humble. Being a model you tend to hear a lot of criticism and its imperative to take it all on the chin.”

Where do you see the plus size male movement going in the next 3-5 years? 

“I see us getting further into the community! Fashion shows with Plus and Straight models alike. More campaigns  for Plus models. Agencies where theres no divide in size, if you have the look/appropriate form then thats it.”

You have a unique sense of style, where would you say you developed that from?

“Ah thanks Jay! You're too kind. I've always been aesthetically inclined, I studied a BA Graphic Design course and even in that I swayed more to the fashion editorial side of things. I guess my outlook has always been that the human body is like a blank page for one to fill as one would so desire and so a lot of my development came from there and general everyday interactions.”

What are some of your go to brands, or pieces to create your looks?

I'm enjoying ASOS a lot right now I think Scott (ASOS Plussize model) and I have a similar build so their clothing always fit me as the would him. To create a look a good pair of boots would usually be my go-to footwear right now.”

What’s next for you? Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years?

“Wow brilliant question! I see myself married hopefully haha!! .... I see myself really pushing forward as a Plus Model and really raising awareness and working hard to better my craft and hone my skills. I've had a lot of amazing experiences and met even more amazing people & I cant wait to do more of that.”

Do you find it easier working internationally versus the states, and why?

“I'm actually from London (Born and raised), But I've preferred working internationally myself. Theres a certain buzz and excitement for both myself and the client where they'd look after you and are open to opinions and trying new things. Although it normally means longer hours you get to learn so much, travel, appreciate other cultures and most times meet other models.”

Anything you want to add before concluding?

“Lastly, I just wanted to encourage every Plussize guy or girl reading this, feeling a bit down or lacking confidence where their size & shape is concerned. There is a place for you and that you reach that point of awakening Zack Miko describes "that no matter who you are you are beautiful because you are you, you are unique and special and attractive and valid." Thanks so much for having me on today Jay. Hey all, we are continuing our "Breaking the Mold a Garment" at a Time series with this amazingly stylish brother.  

Daniel Grimsley a.k.a FrankNtheCity is a personal blogger/style influencer.  He is also a image consultant/wardrobe stylist and I am proud to say, Daniel is a Howard grad! I had the pleasure of conversing with Daniel and getting some insight from his point of view of the position the plus male community is in, what is necessary to continue progression and change in the body positivity movement, and of course how to improve your personal style. Here is our interview, enjoy!!!

As a plus male blogger, what do you consider to be some major challenges for plus men in the industry or those trying to get into the industry?

One of the major challenges for plus men in this industry is the lack of clothing and creativity in the clothing. Yes, there are some major retailers that cater to big and tall men, but most of their clothing is standard across the board and that does not always appeal to every big and tall man. This is a major challenge especially for bloggers and influencers because we have to go the extra mile to find quality clothing that is indeed stylish at the same time. To be a plus man in this industry you have to be daring and different because there will be times where you may have to step outside of the box and that can often times be intimidating.

   In your opinion, what do you feel is necessary in the fashion industry or any other platforms to promote progression in the plus male revolution and the body positivity movement?

We have to support each other. Everyone in this industry has to be supportive of one another and each other’s craft and know that this is not a competition. I see so many times my fellow big and tall blogger brothers (as I refer to them) doing and achieving wonderful things and in my eyes a win for them is not only a win for me, but a win for the plus size male industry as a whole. There is so much awareness surrounding body positivity for women and in order to gain that same following we have to be inclusive and work together to be not only seen, but heard as well in an industry that is growing vastly every day.

 
What are some challenges you faced when it comes to wardrobe. How do you conquer these challenges, and what are some tips you may have for other plus men?

One of the challenges I face personally when it comes to finding wardrobe is finding clothing that actually excites me. For me, when I look for something to wear for an event or a post, I want to make people stop and say “Did he really wear this?”. That can sometimes be very difficult because you cannot find these types of pieces in a Macy’s or Nordstrom. My key to success for years has been THRIFTING. There are no limits in my eyes when it comes to fashion and thrifting is the perfect chance to find things that are different and unique. It is also a great opportunity for you to craft an outfit that is unique to your own personal style and personality.

  What would you consider a major key when buying as a plus sized male consumer? What tips can you provide for those who want to sharpen their edge?

One major key would be to be confident in what you wear, no matter what you wear. You have to silence the opinions of others because they do not walk in your shoes or go through the same struggles you do as a plus size man to find clothing. Also, know what work for your body and proper fitting of clothing. I think over the year’s society has deemed this community as being “sloppy” when that is simply not the case in many situations. In fact, some men just have a hard time finding the necessary resources to find the proper clothing that fits. Lastly, do your research and explore new brands. There are so many brands that cater to big and tall in today’s society that if major retailers do not make it in your size, then you can find someone who is more than willing make something in your size.

You have an amazing sense of style, what would you consider your motivations, influences, and inspiration for your wardrobe?

Thank you! I really appreciate that! One of my major inspirations to be different has always been my mother. She was a curvy woman and growing up as a child I would always see her wear shiny things and stuff that was very bold, and I would wonder why nobody else dressed like she did. She was always the life of the party through the outfits she chose to wear and knowing what worked best for her. Seeing her dress herself without a care of what anyone else thought has shaped me to show society that I will not conform to the norms that have been set for me and that I will not follow their rules. Instead, I will make my own rules and continue to slay it one piece of clothing at a time!

 What do you want to see happen for the plus male revolutionary movement in the coming years?

I want the market for plus men to continue to grow. I want us to continue being body positive advocates for all types of body types. I would love for big retailers to one day carry stylish clothing for big and tall men so that we could actually walk into a store and purchase a stylish shirt or a nice pair of pants without having to wait for it to come in the mail or get things altered to fit nicely. I would love to see some of the major curvy boutiques and brands one day cater to men as well. There’s a sure market for it!

     What is the best advice you could give to someone looking to reinvent themselves and change their sense of style?

Don’t be afraid to be different. Don’t be afraid to get stared at or talked about for being uniquely yourself. Make up your own rules so you change them when you want! Identify what makes you happy and walk in your truth. Once you align those things, you will be unstoppable. You will be confident in yourself enough to not care what anyone else has to say because you are just being authentic self.

What was your motivation behind the creation of the B+ Campaign? What are the campaign's goals? And is there anything we should keep an eye out for?

I started the B+ campaign because I felt like there needed to be a positive space for individuals in the plus size community, especially the big and tall community. There needs to be more awareness about the importance of men being body positive, and I wanted despite's socjd to create a space for nothing but positivity. I always find ways to motivate my friends, and family , so this was my way to share the ways I stay positive despite society constantly trying to tear us down.
